Wind Power Works: Global Wind Day reaches tens of thousands of people

On 15 June, tens of thousands of people from around the world joined in celebrating the enormous benefits of wind power during the first ever Global Wind Day. In a joint effort between the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and many national wind energy associations, over 200 events and activities were organised in 35 different countries, spreading the Wind Day messages to around a million people. Ranging from wind farm open days, conferences, exhibitions, workshops and information days to regattas, sporting contests and theatre shows, there was something for everyone, everywhere.

Wind energy is a driving force for climate protection, economic development and the creation of future-proof jobs. The Global Wind Day 2009 demonstrates the enormous potential of wind energy to the public.”
Sigmar Gabriel, Environment Minister, Germany

Europe has a golden opportunity to develop a green economy which will boost the economy overall and build new jobs. Europe has already an advantage in terms of technological know-how and it needs to continue this technological leadership, but also to provide political and market stimuli.
Swedish Energy Minister Maud Oloffson

“The Administration is working to keep and consolidate the leadership of the Spanish Wind Energy sector. […] The contribution of renewable energies to the Energy mix in 2009 will be higher than 25 per cent”
Pedro Luis Marín, Secretary of State for Energy, Spain

"We are very open and very supportive to the wind energy industry, we try to find the balance between giving support to new energy sources and mixing it with the already existing ones"
Tudor Serban, Secretary of State in Energy, Romania

Wind power works… pass it on!

In December of this year world leaders will meet in Copenhagen to determine our future.

Addressing the most pressing issue of our time, the meeting will negotiate the cuts to carbon emissions which countries must commit to in order to combat climate change.

The scientific consensus is that carbon emissions need to peak and decline by 2020 to prevent global temperatures increasing by 2 degrees Celsius or more, a rise which would precipitate the worst consequences of climate change. Achieving this, however, will require significant reductions in CO2 emissions.

The situation is very urgent but there is no guarantee that leaders will commit to the deep cuts required. The technology for making this happen exists, and we need to make sure world leaders know the facts. We can make the cuts needed and still power the world.

Why it matters to get involved

Despite the pressing weight of evidence for urgent action on climate change, our world leaders are unlikely to make the depth of carbon cuts required – unless you tell them to.

One of their excuses for delaying action is the world’s growing energy demand and the need for power. However, good, clean options already exist and have the capacity to deliver.

There is no excuse for not making deep carbon cuts. Help make sure world leaders know this.

Start generating the power of change now and be part of a global message that wind power works.

Five facts to blow your mind

1. Wind power is clean, proven and available almost everywhere in the world

2. Wind power is part of the energy mix in 70 countries

3. Wind power can be up and running on a large scale, in a matter of months

4. Wind power will save 10 billion tons of CO2 by 2020

5. We need wind power technology to save us from climate change
