Smart announces production of the ForTwo Electric Drive

After meeting with success in its trial run in the UK, Smart has established that they are going to produce the electric ForTwo in small production series. Daimler AG, the parent firm of Smart says that the initial deliveries of the zero-emission car should begin early in 2010.

It was in December 2007 when the trials of the Smart ForTwo commenced with the involvement of universities, councils and energy firms.

It is claimed by the carmaker that the Electric Drive ForTwo, which is a 30kW motor, can power the car up to 30mph in 6.5 seconds and its energy economy is equivalent to 300mpg. It was also revealed by Smart that the second generation ForTwo Electric Drive will go through the same trials and the car is expected to come with better performance, longer range and shorter time to charge the batteries.

We’d like to introduce you to a car that’s designed to bring a breath of fresh air to the streets: the refreshingly new smart electric vehicle – or smart ed, as we call it. It’s the natural product of smart’s unswerving commitment to the environment and innovation – not to mention fun. It isn’t available to buy just yet, but it isn’t a million miles off.

Think of a smart. Then think of an electric socket concealed behind what used to be the fuel cap. Picture the complete absence of exhaust fumes, so no CO2 emissions from the rear. Close your eyes and hear… no sound at all coming from the engine. Imagine no engine oil, no road tax, and no London congestion charge and you’ll start to get a sense of what really makes the new smart ed tick.

Powered solely by electricity, and chargeable from any three-pin socket the smart ed can achieve the equivalent of 300 mpg – that amounts to a saving of up to 80% in fuel costs over the already highly economical smart fortwo. The ev can travel up to 72 miles between charges, which typically take around 8 hours for a full charge – ideal for charging at work between your morning and evening commutes. If your journey takes you into the capital, you will find free electricity provided by some London boroughs, as well as free or discounted parking. With a top-up charge during the day, the smart ed’s daily range weighs in at 100 miles.

With that in mind, we’re running a market trial with selected blue chip companies who are happy to meet our requirements to power the cars using only renewable energy sources. When we say zero emissions, we really mean it! Among the partners already enrolled in the trial are Urban Splash, Islington and Coventry Councils, Foster & Partners, CarbonNeutral Company, EDF Energy and Amey.

What’s more, our ed hasn’t had to sacrifice any of the fortwo’s performance or class-leading equipment: expect the full complement of Mercedes-Benz safety features and a powerful Zytek electric motor, electronically-limited top speed of 60 mph. Once it’s up to speed (0-30mph in an impressive 6.5 seconds) the ed uses its tiny weight gain to deliver an exciting and stable drive.

So there you have it: a zero emission vehicle that is 100% smart; a car that will save money and the environment. Although the smart ed won’t be available to the public just yet, it’s definitely something we’re working on.

From the word go, the environment has always been an important issue for us – and our policy follows strict Daimler AG environmental guidelines. Protecting the environment, energy efficiency and preserving natural resources are all key considerations. These start with smart development, run through production in smartville and end in the recycling of many smart components.

Even in the development phase we use eco-friendly parts. And we insist that all our system partners take these requirements as seriously as we do. This means that the parts and components they deliver should be developed and manufactured to the same strict ecological criteria. From the outset harmful substances like lead, chromium, mercury and cadmium are barred from the production process and PVC is almost completely avoided. smart control system: The whole development process is tracked by an ecological control system specially created to monitor compliance with these strict regulations. All development teams, whether directly or indirectly involved are an integral part of this system. Since 1997, the Böblingen site has been certified to ISO 14001 by external inspectors.

Cars are made from hundreds of components, but there can be massive differences between how environmentally friendly they are. smart look to use alternative materials & manufacturing concepts – that way we can find solutions that are best for the environment. The eco-improvement process: At smart we’ve always considered how we can use eco-friendly materials in the production of our cars. Each individual smart component is subjected to a continuous ecological improvement process. And all ongoing development projects make the best use of recycled and sustainable raw materials.

At smart we even produce an ‘eco’ balance sheet. It offers fascinating insights into the future, insights that are provided by GaBi, the software system that’s used for life cycle engineering of new component concepts as they’re developed. Environmental impact: GaBi evaluates the demands on raw materials and anticipates emissions and assesses the volume of waste that’s likely to be created. The entire life cycle is taken into account, from production through to recycling. It can even compare the specific consumption of energy by different means of transport per passenger kilometre. So it’s pretty in-depth!

Things often need to be dismantled before they can be recycled. That’s why the smart has been engineered to make this process a whole lot easier – because it’s made from modules! Born again: smarts are built from pre-assembled modules. It’s this modular system that makes dismantling the cars much simpler. And this in turn makes it much easier to strip-out and grade the materials for re-use – so some parts of a smart see the light of day more than once. That’s also why we much prefer to use synthetics as they are easier to recycle.

Because of the recycling process, selecting the right materials to build a smart is a very important. Priority is given to the use of synthetics as these are easier to recycle. So for example, the dashboard is made of polypropylene. Even the wheel housing covers are made from 100% recycled synthetic. This way, today’s components can be tomorrow’s material. smart manufacturing: And it’s not just the raw materials that affect the recycling process, it’s also the way the smart parts are made. We’ve progressed a lot by reducing the number of different materials involved. So where the air duct in the dashboard was once made from twenty different components, it’s now just made from one – and all in a single moulding!

Sustained economy also means accepting responsibility for correctly disposing of residual materials on site. With the introduction of smart centre recycling across Europe, we have succeeded in implementing a comprehensive workshop disposal system in all distribution countries for the very first time. Recycling across Europe: A partner appointed by us ensures recycling is managed correctly within the smart centres with special container systems suitable for both correct storage and transport. Continuous audits of systems and individual service-providers ensure maximum environmental compatibility during the disposal processes.

Powder-coating is the painting technique used on our smart tridion safety cell. Generally regarded as the most environmentally-friendly painting method in the automotive industry, it’s a unique innovation. 40% less energy: Powder coating uses 40% less energy than conventional painting methods, with zero solvent emissions. Paint slurry is a thing of the past too. We collect surplus powder paint and 98% is then reused for painting. Another ecological advantage is that there’s no water consumption and no waste water either!

Saving energy is also really important when protecting the environment. All smart buildings have effective thermal insulation and the energy released during the production process is recovered wherever possible. For example – the excess heat from the injection-moulding machinery is used to heat the painting cabins air supply. smart energy centre: Our production facility at smartville even has its own energy centre. It uses natural gas as a primary energy source and supplies the buildings and production facility with hot water and even some electricity too.

Like it or not, admin and production buildings are unavoidable. That’s why we try and make them as eco-friendly as possible and try to blend them into their natural environment. smartville: smartville nestles in the hilly landscape of the Lorraine region in France, surrounded by green fields, meadows and fruit trees. In fact, you’d hardly know we were there at all!

Everyone at smart agrees that avoiding waste in the first place is far better than recycling. That’s why many of the car’s parts that arrive in smartville are in re-usable packaging. Recycle: However, sometimes waste can’t entirely be avoided. That’s why we make sure it’s collected, separated, graded and recycled wherever possible.

At smart we’ve our own environmental management system. This describes all the responsibilities and processes required for implementing our environmental policy. It also makes our environmental objectives crystal clear. smart objectives: Even when smart was in development, we were thinking about a process-driven environmental management system. So we were able to work towards implementing our environmental policy and achieving our objectives right from the off. We were delighted when our system was was certified to DIN EN ISO 14001 in February 1997 at our Böblingen facility. And annual internal and external auditing makes sure this system follows a continuous improvement process.

With our products, we are setting a milestone for environmentally-compatible individual mobility. Every day, we live an efficient and dynamic environment management system which is aligned towards ongoing improvement. Environmental policy at smart: Everyone at smart is responsible for fulfilling the ecological demands of today and tomorrow. We regard the environmental compatibility of our products as an essential objective in all phases of the product’s life cycle. Together with our partners, we implement the ecological requirements on our products.

We believe in teamwork when it comes to environmental protection, together with our partners we embrace ecology and deal with all issues jointly. Co-ordinating environmental protection: 15 different independent companies have settled in smartville. In order to integrate and co-ordinate the environmental protection activities of these system partners; an environment management system extending beyond the actual location has been implemented.
